Citizens for Saving California Farming Industries

The November election was a severe wake-up call for farmers in California. Voters in the heart of the state overwhelmingly defeated Proposition 2, the ill-conceived animal rights initiative. They saw it as a serious threat to the poultry industry and veal and hog producers.

But the measure passed by a nearly 2-to-1 margin because voters in the high-population counties (from San Francisco along the coast through Los Angeles) cast their emotional, warm and fuzzy votes in favor of it. They never gave agriculture a thought.

It will happen again and again on dozens of other issues if something is not done. Powerful social and political forces inside and outside the state will continue to propose measures harmful to agricutlure.

It's time to let the coastal and metropolitan counties have their way. If they can't appreciate agriculture they should live without it. They should form their own state.

The farm community can start the ball rolling by proposing that the 45 interior counties come together as a separate state. Separating California into two states is a mammoth undertaking. Some will tell you it's impossible. But simply allowing the mass numbers of farm uneducated city dwellers to dictate farm policy is committing agricultural suicide in California. No other region in the world, let alone the United States, has the capability of producing the variety of agriculture commodities as California. We must not allow the shortsightedness of sheer voting numbers to destroy an irreplaceable industry.

I like the idea and a VIABLE vehicle to achieve this is outlined below--specifically, a National Constitutional Convention that will bring about AUTONOMOUS REGIONAL GOVERNMENT. Presently, in order to separate California into 2 states I believe the Constitution states that Congress's approval would be required. That may present problems. My proposal creates new REGIONAL federal governments which would likely be much more state-friendly.

Did some checking and as it turns out I was correct. It would require Congressional approval in order to partition California. Article 4, Section 3 of the Constitution states . . . "no new state shall be formed or erected within the jurisdiction of any other state; nor any state be formed by the junction of two or more states, or parts of states WITHOUT the consent of the legislatures of the states concerned as well as of the CONGRESS".

In this instance, a Democratically controlled Congress would more than probably be very reluctant to admit a new state that would very likely result in the addition of 2 Republican Senators to the U.S. Senate. There are probably other reasons too which I can't think of right now.
As indicated though, my proposal for AUTONOMOUS REGIONAL GOVERNMENT would be a VIABLE way around this potential problem. If the Congress is the problem, simply do away with the Congress!!

Hi Virgil, I sympathize with you, but my concern for splitting the state is....if we do that who controls the water? The east or the west? Doesn't most of So. CA water come from the north via aquaducts?

I understand your concerns, I come from a long line of farmers and ranchers. Some of your concerns don't seem to be about ranching and farming but just the general state (no pun intended) of affairs with the state. These issues won't be solved by spliting the state it will only split the issues into two groups and the issues will carry on as usual, because it's people that are the problem.
